Fight for Judicial Independence

C.P No. 4346 of 2024 filed before the Honourable Sindh High Court at Karachi. [Islamabad High Court Bar Association & Another vs University of Karachi]
A Petition was filed by the Islamabad High Court Bar Association owing to cancellation of L.LB degree of Mr. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, sitting Judge at the Honourable Islamabad High Court. The degree was cancelled by a department “Syndicate” of the University. The controversy involved in this Petition is multi-layered and involves interests of multiple entities including but not limited to the ruling party and the intelligence of Pakistan. This cancellation of degree came to the shock of everyone related to the legal profession however, this controversy could be linked to the absolute exercise of judicial independence by Mr. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, who was one of the six signatories of the letter addressed to the Honourable Supreme Court of Pakistan, regarding interference of intelligence agencies in the judicial process. The malafides behind the cancellation of the L.LB degree are clearly apparent as the issue/cancellation was done without any notice, without any lawful jurisdiction and after 32 years since the grant of the degree.
The Petition is now pending before the Honourable Sindh High Court and there is a stay operating against the University of Karachi, restraining them from taking any further coercive action in this matter.
